NewsweekBy Jordan KingSep 04, 2025The conservative think tank behind crafting Project 2025 will call for a "Manhattan Project to restore the nuclear family" in response to America's falling fertility rate, according to a draft policy paper. The Heritage Foundation's draft position paper called "We Must Save the American Family" calls on President Donald Trump's administration to enact policies to encourage more people to get married and have children, according to a report in The Washington Post, which obtained a copy of the five-page executive summary.[...]The reported Heritage Foundation proposal includes plans for government-seeded savings accounts for married couples, a call to measure all policies against their effects on marriage and births, and blames "free love, pornography, careerism, the Pill, abortion, same-sex relations, and no-fault divorce" for the decline in both. Many conservatives have embraced pronatalism, but there is widespread debate about the causes of the fertility decline.Sociologist Karen Benjamin Guzzo, from the Carolina Population Center, a family demographer who studies formation behaviors in the U.S., told Newsweek she found reported Heritage Foundation proposal "alarming," called it a "backlash against feminism" and said fertility is "much more complicated."
But at the same time the Republicans have cut programs designed to low income families, they cut SNAP, WIC, and Head Start. So that tells me that they only want White families to have children.
Why? Because they are giving money as a reward for having children (à la "The Handmaid's Tale") and not help raise them.
In the report, the Heritage Foundation calls for the government to direct child care funding to individual families rather than programs such as Head Start, a federally funded initiative that provides support to pregnant mothers and children from birth to 5 years old, according to the Post.[...]"The answer to the problem of loneliness and demographic decline must begin with marriage," the draft paper says.
Once again... this is racist! If it was really about raising the population, the Republicans would continue supporting low income families with Medicaid, WIC, SNAP, and Head Start and not have a lump sum bribe.
On the road to the Handmaid's Tale... Republican proposals are create conditions that resemble the slippery slope Margaret Atwood envisioned:
- Remove access to abortion → normalize forced birth
- Restrict contraception → reduce reproductive autonomy
- Enshrine traditional family structures → stigmatize alternatives (That's us, the LGBTQ+ community)
- Use religion to justify laws → marginalize dissent (Banning divorce)
Each step may seem “reasonable” or “moral” in isolation. But taken together, they map disturbingly close to a soft version of Gilead, where choice shrinks, roles narrow, and freedom fades.
