The Long Arm Of The Law

So Trump want to cheat... redraw state districts maps to gerrymander them and Texas Democrats flee to stop it! But Trump wants to put his two cents in and call in the feds!
August 7, 2025

Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) says FBI Director Kash Patel has approved his request to help state and local law enforcement locate Texas Democrats who have fled the Lone Star State in hopes of stalling a partisan redistricting effort.

“I am proud to announce that Director Kash Patel has approved my request for the FBI to assist state and local law enforcement in locating runaway Texas House Democrats,” Cornyn said in a statement Thursday morning.

“I thank President Trump and Director Patel for supporting and swiftly acting on my call for thr federal government to hold these supposed lawmakers accountable for fleeing Texas,” Cornyn said.
However, there is one small teeny tiny detail that the good Senator from Texas and the FBI Director Kash Patel have forgotten. No federal laws have been broken! Just a minor detail. The legislature can only issue a civil arrest warrant, not a criminal arrest warrant!
“Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses,” he wrote earlier this week.
So the FBI is on an Easter Egg hunt for a crime to charge them with!
Cornyn asked Patel in an Aug. 5 letter for the FBI to “take any appropriate steps to aid in Texas state law enforcement efforts to locate or arrest potential lawbreakers who have fled the state” to stop a Republican-led redistricting effort from moving forward.
Notice: "potential lawbreakers" they don't even know if any laws are being broken!
“Specifically, I am concerned that legislators who solicited or accepted funds to aid in their efforts to avoid their legislative duties may be guilty of bribery or other public corruption offenses,” he wrote earlier this week.
They are Easter Egg hunting! Fox News wrote...
"In a representative democracy, we resolve our differences by debating and voting, not by running away," Cornyn wrote in the letter. "Some Texas legislators have fled to New York, and others have fled to Illinois. Since these state legislators are currently outside of Texas, the Texas Department of Public Safety may need support to arrest the fleeing lawmakers."
How ironic that the Texas AG said "representative democracy" because that is exactly what the Republicans are trying to do away with by gerrymandering the districts to block Democrats seats! The Hill went on to write,
In an op-ed published by the Houston Chronicle on Tuesday, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul admitted to hosting Texas House Democrats at the state Capitol and governor's residence in Albany this week, claiming they were "following a legitimate and legal tactic."
So what's next? Arresting the New York governor for inviting the Texas legislators to dinner?
"Donald Trump won all five of these seats that we will be making Republican seats," Abbott said. "The same thing should apply in all those other states."
So that is how they justify rigging the election! The website "The Independent Voter" writes...
Breaking quorum in the Texas Legislature is not a crime, according to multiple legal experts, including those cited by WFAA. “Breaking quorum is not illegal. It’s a legislative tactic that’s been used for generations,” said constitutional law professor Randall Erben.

More importantly, it is not a felony committed across state lines, which would generally warrant the FBI’s involvement. The FBI does not enforce state civil warrants and only intervenes when federal laws are violated.
But it goes against Trump's wishes so the FBI Director and bowed down and kissed Trumps feet and said "As you wish master!"
Abbott has threatened to have the seats of Democratic lawmakers declared vacated. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and other Republicans argue Democrats’ absence constitutes abandonment of duty and say they should be removed and replaced.
However, they need to be impeached first! Newsweek reported,

Texas Governor Greg Abbott warned on Sunday that Democratic lawmakers who fled the state to break quorum during a special legislative session could be removed from office for abandoning their duties. Abbott cited a 2021 opinion by Attorney General Ken Paxton as justification, asserting that it allows him to declare vacancies and replace absent members.
However it is only "his opinion" I have been around enough lawyers to know, "It is our opinion..." is a universal phrase lawyer use. I was moderating a panel with the head lawyer from the Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities and she used that all the time. Why? Because until a judge says so it is only an opinion.
Abbott's threat highlights a broader clash over executive power, legislative independence and due process in Texas politics. While Abbott cites Paxton's 2021 opinion to justify potential removals, the opinion indicates that only courts—not the governor—can determine whether a legislator has abandoned office. If a governor could unilaterally remove legislators for breaking quorum, it would drastically expand executive power and potentially override voters' choices.
You know the Republicans are basically saying "F**k the voters... we know what's best for them."

The Texas Tribune reports that the legislators are on a fact finding trip to various state legislatures...
Texas Democrats are in Illinois, Massachusetts and New York to discuss their options with governors and legislators sympathetic to their case. In Austin, House Speaker Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, has said that “all options are on the table” to compel Democrats to return or punish them for their absence.
It sounds to me that they are on a working trip and not just playing hooky.

Stay tuned for the latest in the continuing saga of the Texas legislature uprising!
