A new WBUR poll (topline, crosstabs) out Thursday finds that a slim majority of Massachusetts voters do not want to repeal a 2016 state law that offers greater protections for transgender individuals in public accommodations.

It is very likely a challenge to the law, which supporters hail as legal protection against the discrimination of transgender people, will appear as a referendum question on the November ballot. The existing legislation allows transgender individuals to access public spaces, like restrooms and locker rooms, based on the gender with which they identify instead of their assigned anatomical sex.

According to the WBUR poll, 52 percent of voters oppose getting rid of the law, while 38 percent support its repeal.
You got that? Only 52 percent of voters oppose getting rid of the law! That is within the margin of error of the poll.

You know tons of money are going to be pouring in to overturn the law; they are going to use fear and bigotry against us. The opposition will use lies to create fear, you are going to see ads about bathrooms and locker rooms and dirty old men.

What can you do if you don’t live in Massachusetts?

They will need money to counteract the hateful rhetoric that will come from the religious and conservative zealots.

If you live in Massachusetts then contact either MTPC or MassEquality to ask them what you can do.

One of the things that we learned here in Connecticut is to make sure no negative letters-to-the-editor go unchallenged. Don’t get into a “flame war” but just state the facts and leave the name calling to the opposition. We only had to influence the politicians not the public which is going to be a lot harder.

Another rule to remember… go after the movable middle.

Thank your supporters.

Let the opposition know you don’t agree with them.

Then go after those who are sitting the fence. They are the ones that count.
