Saturday 9 On and On

Crazy Sam’s Saturday 9 On and On (1977)

On Saturdays I take a break from the heavy stuff and have some fun…
Unfamiliar with this week's song. Hear it here.

1) This song describes the plight of "poor ol' Jimmy," who caught his girlfriend kissing someone else. Have you ever spied on a romantic partner?
Nope, but way back in high school I had a date with a girl from Vermont who was down in Connecticut and she called me and said she was sick and broke the date. Well later that night who drives through the parking lot at McDonalds, her and the quarterback from school.
Oh well, I figured it was good that it happened then instead of later.

2) In this song, Stephen Bishop sings that he "smiles when he feels like dying." When did you recently put on a happy face, even though you really weren't all that happy?
What stands out was when I was on the Sunday morning talk show “Face the State” and the moderator kept on asking the same question over and over about bathrooms. I had a smile on but inside I was doing a slow burn.

3) Stephen Bishop always wanted to be a musician, and as a child he began playing the clarinet. Did you take lessons -- dance, art, music -- as a child? If yes, did you take them because you enjoyed them, or because your parents made you take them?
I tried to play the trumpet and I think that the whole family had a sigh of relieve when I gave it up.

4) When he was 12, inspired by The Beatles on The Ed Sullivan Show, he switched to the guitar and began writing songs. Tell us about someone or something that influenced your career path.
The science teacher in high school.

5) Stephen Bishop attended Will C. Crawford High School in San Diego. This school requires students complete 20 hours of community service every year. Tell us about an organization, cause or campaign you volunteered for, either as a student or an adult.
Well in my retirement I volunteer at the Hartford Gay and Lesbian Health Collective two day a week and I am also the volunteer executive director of a non-profit (hence the interview on Face the State).

6) In 1977, when this song was popular, Seattle Slew won racing's Triple Crown. Sam's mother has always been afraid of horses. Is there an animal you're uncomfortable with?
Naw.

7) Also in 1977, moviegoers waited in line for hours to see Star Wars. What's the longest line you waited in recently?
I try to avoid lines; I think longest line was at the Department of Motor Vehicles. Where else?

8) The mini-series Roots first aired in 1977. Today Americans are spending more time and money than ever to research ancestry. How far back can you trace your family tree?
I never traced my family tree but my grandmother one time said that we are related to Benedict Arnold.

9) Random question: It's often said that nobody's perfect. How about you? What quality keeps you from being perfect?
Well I’m tone deaf, can’t carry a tune or keep a beat.

  1. Benedict Arnold, huh? It can be surprising what's hiding in our family trees.

  2. I'm completely tone deaf, too! I so admire people who can sing.

  3. Why is it that every DMV anywhere in the US is a freaking nightmare???? You would think that they would have been able to figure that out by now.

  4. In Connecticut I use all the online services but last year I had to renew my photo license so I had to go in person to have my photo taken.

  5. Bennie actually saved us from being tied up and served up to the English banking system...Someday he will get his due...
The girl who broke the date.. so uncool!
Many of us have stood in long lines at the DMV! I’m glad ours has lined the walls with seating!

  6. My husband can't sing a lick. It makes me sad because I'm pretty musical. Learning your family history can be interesting, to say the least.

  7. How unfortunate that the bathroom was all the speaker thought about. There's so much more to equity.
