GRESHAM, Ore. – An Oregon bakery discriminated against a same-sex couple who wanted to purchase a wedding cake, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries announced Monday.

The owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa bakery will have to pay the couple up to $150,000, BOLI spokesman Charlie Burr said. The exact amount will be determined at a hearing on March 10.

The owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa will have to pay up to $75,000 per person who filed the complaint, which means the same-sex couple could be awarded up to $150,000, Burr said.
I have mixed feels about the fine. I think fines should walk the fine line between being excessive and being a slap on the wrist. I feel fines should be enough to keep people from breaking the law.

If the judge does award the couple $150,000 I think it will create martyr for the conservative Christians. They will become a rallying point for “Religious Freedom” legislation. I would like to see the fine set at $2,500 for each of the plaintiffs.

What are your thoughts?
