The Northeast Is Amazing!

The northeast and Washington DC has marriage equality from the tip of Maine down to the Maryland’s Delmar peninsula when Pennsylvania became the 19th state and last in the Northeast to have marriage equality.

*Massachusetts does not protect public accommodation for gender identity and expression.

Notice anything missing?

New Hampshire and New York do not have protection for gender identity and expression. In New York in 2002 the non-discrimination bill was tied up in the legislature and not going anywhere, so Gay Inc. made a back room deal and threw us under the bus, passing the bill without gender identity and expression. They promised to work to pass GENDA but that got side tracked for marriage. In 2009, a gender identity and expression non-discrimination bill (HB415) was introduced in New Hampshire and it passed in the House by one vote but in Senate not one senator voted for it, not even its sponsors.

And in Pennsylvania they do not even have protection for sexual orientation or gender identity/gender expression. So you can get married but just don’t tell your boss, landlord, and anyone else because you can be fired and thrown out of your apartment for being gay or lesbian or trans or Bi.

Another thing to remember while everyone is celebrating all of the court rulings… the Supreme Court has not heard the states appeal yet. There are six states that are challenging the courts’ rulings over turning their constitutions bans on marriage equality and the Roberts’ court is very conservative. The conservative justices Roberts, Scalia, Alito, and Thomas will be looking for a way to weasel out of overturning the states’ constitutions; they are strong believers in “States Rights.”
