HERCULES -- A day after telling police he was viciously attacked in a campus restroom, a transgender high school student recanted his report to police, admitting that he fabricated an incident that fit a troubling pattern of violence on the campus and raised concerns about a groundbreaking state transgender rights law.

The student, who was not identified, told police that three teens had cornered him in a bathroom on the Hercules High School campus, physically and sexually assaulting him. Police said at the time that they were classifying the attack as a hate crime because of "disparaging remarks" the attackers reportedly made.
[…]
The Hercules Police Department issued a statement late Tuesday afternoon saying that detectives working the case had been unable to verify aspects of the student's report, including the timeline of the alleged attack. Despite the student's claims of violence, he also did not have injuries to his head, face or hands, police said.

During a subsequent interview Tuesday, the student "admitted he fabricated the entire story," Officer Connie Van Putten said. She added that the department would review the case to determine whether investigators would recommend charges be filed against the teen. It is possible police could charge the 15-year-old with filing a false report.
This hurt, many transgender agencies stood up for him, many news agencies reported the alleged rape and assault. This gave power to the opposition. This cost us credibility.

We don’t know why the student made up these allegations; was it fear? Was it a cry for help? Was it because he thought he needed to bring attention to the environment at school? It is now in the hands of the legal system to decide his fate.
